About the Church and Brotherhood
The Saint Edward Brotherhood is a group of monks who started living at Brookwood Cemetery in 1982. Their goal was to prepare a new church in a very special, protected area. This church would become the home for the relics (holy remains) of Saint Edward the Martyr.
Who was Saint Edward the Martyr?
Saint Edward was a King of England. He was sadly killed in the year 978. After his death, his brother, Ethelred the Unready, became king. The church was built to honor Saint Edward, and his relics were placed there in 1988.
The Church Community
The church has two main groups of people:
- A small group of monks who live there. They sing church services every day at the shrine, which is a special holy place where Saint Edward's relics are kept.
- A group of Orthodox Christians who are part of the church's mission. These Christians join the monks for services, especially on Sundays and important feast days.
Church Leadership
St. Edward's Church is currently part of the Church of the Genuine Orthodox Christians of Greece (GOC-K). This is a Greek Old Calendarists True Orthodox Church led by Archbishop Kallinikos, who lives in Athens. The church joined this group in 2014. Before that, it was part of the Orthodox Church of Greece (Holy Synod in Resistance). It had left the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in 2007.
