The Church of St Martin is a very old church located in North Perrott, a small village in Somerset, England. It was first built way back in the 12th century! Because it's so old and important, it's been given a special status called a Grade I listed building. This means it's one of the most important historic buildings in England and is protected by law.

The Church's Long History

The Church of St Martin stands near the River Parrett. The building you see today was mostly built in the 16th century. It was likely built by a nobleman named Henry Daubeney, 1st Earl of Bridgewater. However, parts of the even older 12th-century church were kept and used in the new building. This shows how people valued the original structure.

What is a Grade I Listed Building?

When a building is a Grade I listed building, it means it's considered to be of "exceptional interest." These buildings are very important to England's history and architecture. They are carefully looked after to make sure they stay preserved for many years to come. The Church of St Martin received this special protection on April 19, 1961.

The Tower and Its Bells

The church has a strong tower that also dates back to the 12th century. This means the tower is one of the oldest parts of the church! Inside the tower, there are six bells. These bells have been ringing out over the village for a very long time.

  • The oldest bell was made in 1786 by a bell founder named George Davis from Bridgwater.
  • Four other bells were made in 1803 by members of the famous Bilbie family. The Bilbies were well-known bell makers in the West Country of England.

The Church Community

The Church of St Martin is part of a larger church area called the Wulfric benefice. A benefice is a group of churches that work together. This benefice is part of the Crewkerne and Ilminster deanery, which is another way of organizing churches in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. This means the church is an active part of the local community and the wider Church of England.
