The Church of St Peter is an old church in Rendcomb, England. It is part of the Church of England. You can find it on the grounds of Rendcomb College. This church was mostly rebuilt in the 1500s. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it is very important historically.

History of the Church

There has been a church in this spot for a very long time. The current building was largely rebuilt in 1517. A local wool merchant named Edmund Tame helped with this project. When the church was rebuilt, three old pillars were used again. These pillars were from an even older church. They were built in the Norman style.

Later, in 1895, the church had a big update. This was called a Victorian restoration. It means parts of the church were repaired and changed. This happened during the Victorian era.

The church is part of the Churn Valley area. This area is within the Diocese of Gloucester.

Church Design and Features

The Church of St Peter is made of stone. It has a special design called Perpendicular Gothic. The roof is made of lead and stone tiles. The church has a long main area called a nave. It also has a side area called a south aisle. There is a chancel at the end, with a small south chapel. The church also has a vestry and a tall tower at the west end.

The Tower and Bells

The church tower has three levels. It is supported by strong buttresses. Inside the tower are six bells. Three of these bells are very old, from the 1400s. The other three bells were remade in the 1840s. This was done by a bell maker named Thomas Mears.

Inside the Church

Inside the church, you can find a stone tablet. This tablet lists the names of six men from the village. These men served and died during World War II.

There is also a special stone font. This font is used for baptisms. It is very old, from the 1000s. The font was not always in the church. It was brought to Rendcomb from a place called Elmore Court. For a while, it was even used as a garden decoration! It was moved into the church in the 1800s.

Around the font, there are carvings of eleven figures. These figures represent the apostles. There were twelve apostles in total. The twelfth apostle, Judas, is shown by just a pair of feet.
