History of Holy Trinity Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity has a long and interesting past. It was first named after a saint called Gildas. The very first priest we know about was John de Hancle, who started working there in 1304.
Who Owned the Church?
For a long time, Glastonbury Abbey was in charge of the church. This was until the dissolution of the monasteries. This big event happened in the 1500s when King Henry VIII closed down many monasteries and abbeys in England. After that, the church's ownership went to the Marquess of Bath, a powerful noble family.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The church has different parts that were built at different times. It's like a puzzle put together over centuries!
The Oldest Parts of the Church
The chancel is the oldest part of the church. This is the area around the altar where the clergy (priests) usually sit. It was built around 1270, even before the rest of the church! You can still see the original window designs, called tracery, in the chancel. There's also a special carved stone seat called a Sedilia there.
The nave is the main part of the church where the people sit during services. Both the nave and the church tower were built in the 15th century (the 1400s). The tower holds eight bells, and four of these bells are very old, dating all the way back to 1777!
Later Additions and Changes
In the early 1800s, a new section called the north aisle was added. An aisle is a passage along the side of the church. The inside of the church got a big update in 1843 by an architect named Benjamin Ferrey. Around that time, an organ was also put into the church.
Modern Updates
More recently, between 2000 and 2004, the church had some modern improvements. The old wooden pews (long benches) were taken out. New lighting was put in, and they even installed heating under the floor to keep everyone warm!
The Church Today
The Church of the Holy Trinity is still an active church today. It's part of a group of churches in Street and Walton. This group belongs to the Glastonbury deanery, which is a local area for churches.
