The Story of Citypoint
Citypoint was first built in 1967. Back then, it was called Britannic House. It had 35 floors and stood about 122 meters (400 feet) tall. It was built to be the main office, or headquarters, for a big company called British Petroleum (now known as BP).
This building was special because it was the first one in the City of London to be taller than St Paul's Cathedral. The people who designed it were F. Milton Cashmore and H. N. W. Grosvenor. In 1991, British Petroleum moved out, and the building's name changed to Britannic Tower.
A New Look for Citypoint
In the year 2000, the building got a big makeover, which is called a refurbishment. They added more space inside and made the building a bit taller, reaching about 127 meters (417 feet). A company called Sheppard Robson helped make these improvements. After this big change, the building was given its current name, Citypoint.
How Tall is Citypoint?
Citypoint is one of the tallest buildings in the City of London. It's the seventh tallest in that specific area. Some other very tall buildings nearby include the Heron Tower and Tower 42. However, when you look at all of Greater London, Citypoint is the 23rd tallest building.
Who Owns Citypoint?
Citypoint is a very valuable building. In 2005, its owner, Pillar Properties, sold it for more than £500 million. This was one of the biggest sales ever for an office building in the City of London.
A few years later, in 2007, the building was put up for sale again. This time, it sold for £650 million to an American company called Beacon Capital Partners. At that moment, it was the most expensive building ever sold in the United Kingdom! However, another building, 8 Canada Square, sold for even more just a few months later.
Buildings Nearby
There are plans for other large buildings to be built close to Citypoint. One plan is for a 43-story residential tower at Milton Court, which will be about 140 meters (459 feet) tall. Another office tower, about 90 meters (295 feet) tall, has also been built nearby at Ropemaker Place by British Land.
