The Story of Ciudad Evita

How Ciudad Evita Began

Ciudad Evita was started in 1947. The President of Argentina, Juan Perón, created it. He wanted to build a special "planned community." This means the whole city was designed before it was built. The Eva Perón Foundation helped develop the first homes.

President Perón decided to name the new city after his wife. Her name was Eva "Evita" Duarte de Perón. So, the city became "Ciudad Evita," which means "Evita City" in Spanish.

Unique City Design

The first 15,000 homes in Ciudad Evita had a simple style. It was called Spanish Colonial Revival. People said the streets were laid out in a very special way. They were shaped like Eva Perón's profile! It looked like she was waving to people flying into Ministro Pistarini International Airport. This airport is about 6 kilometers (4 miles) south of the city.

Changes to the City's Name

Over the years, Ciudad Evita's name changed several times. This happened because of political changes in Argentina.

In 1955, President Perón was removed from power. This event was called the Revolución Libertadora. Because the city was named after Eva Perón, its name was changed. It became Ciudad General Belgrano. This honored General Manuel Belgrano.

The city kept growing during this time. A new area called Barrio Vemme was added between 1960 and 1967. In 1963, the city's management moved to the La Matanza Council.

Then, in 1973, Perón's political group, the Peronists, returned to power. The city's name was changed back to Ciudad Evita. Another new area, Barrio Alas, opened in 1974. It was for officers from the Argentine Air Force. They were stationed at the Morón Air Base.

In March 1976, there was another big political change. The Peronist government was removed. The city's name changed again. This time, it became Ciudad General Martín Miguel de Güemes. This honored General Martín Miguel de Güemes.

Finally, in 1983, democracy returned to Argentina. The city's name was changed back to Ciudad Evita for good. In 1986, the Buenos Aires Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was built here. In 1997, Ciudad Evita was declared a National Historic Monument of Argentina. This means it is an important historical place.
