C.E. Joan Gamper

The Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper is a special place where the famous Spanish football club FC Barcelona trains. It's like a home base for all their teams, from young players to the professional stars. This amazing sports city opened on June 1, 2006. It was named after Joan Gamper, who founded the club a long time ago.

This huge training ground is located in Sant Joan Despí, a town near Barcelona. It covers a massive area, about 163,650 square meters! Since 2006, it has been used for youth team training and matches. Then, in January 2009, the first team, with all the famous players, started training there too.

Many other sports teams from FC Barcelona also use these facilities. This includes teams for Basketball, Handball, and Futsal. They use special areas like the multi-sports pavilion. Before this facility was built, many youth teams trained at the Camp Nou stadium, especially at the Mini Estadi. Now, all those teams train at Ciutat Esportiva. In 2019, the Johan Cruyff Stadium opened right next to Ciutat Esportiva. It replaced the Mini Estadi as the place where teams like FC Barcelona B and FC Barcelona Femení play their matches.

New Masia building, at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper
The new Masia, a residence for young players, opened in 2011.

FC Barcelona's first team moved their training to this facility on January 19, 2009. This was a big change! For 30 years, the first team had trained on a small pitch next to the Camp Nou, known as the La Masia pitch. The new facilities for the first team are just as good as those at Camp Nou. By the start of the 2009/2010 season, it even had a pool and saunas to help players recover after training.

In 2011, a brand new residence was built on the site. This building houses FC Barcelona's young players. Before, these players lived at the original La Masia building. The new residence has living spaces for about 85 players.

The club bought the land for Ciutat Esportiva back in 1989. It's only about 4.5 kilometers away from the Camp Nou stadium. A direct road connects it to Barcelona and Sant Joan Despí. Building the Ciutat Esportiva cost a lot of money, around 68 million euros in total. The club sold some land to help pay for it, and also invested its own money.
