Ciénagas is a small community, also known as a barrio, located in the municipality of Camuy, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,554 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
History of Ciénagas
Becoming Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico was given to the United States by Spain. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is connected to the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 711 people lived in the Ciénagas barrio at that time.
