Clarence Maurice Mitchell III (born December 14, 1939 – died October 11, 2012) was an important American politician. He came from Baltimore, Maryland. He served in both the Maryland Senate and the Maryland House of Delegates. These are parts of the state government that make laws for Maryland.
Early Life and Education
Clarence Mitchell III was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on December 14, 1939. His parents were Clarence Mitchell Jr. and Juanita Jackson Mitchell. His family was well-known for their work in civil rights.
He went to public schools in Baltimore City. Later, he attended Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C.. After high school, he studied at the University of Maryland and Morgan State University. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
Political Career
Clarence Mitchell III began his political journey at a young age. He was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates when he was just 22 years old. He started serving in 1963 and stayed there until 1967. The House of Delegates is where state laws are first discussed and voted on.
After four years, he ran for the Maryland Senate and won. He served in the Senate for 20 years, from 1967 to 1986. During his time in the Senate, he held several important leadership roles. He was the Deputy Majority Leader and the Majority Whip. He also worked on important committees, helping to shape laws for Maryland.
Beyond Maryland, Mitchell was also a leader on a national level. He was elected President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. This group helps state lawmakers from across the country work together on important issues. He held this position from 1979 to 1985.
Family Life
Clarence Mitchell III was married to Joyce Ellis. They had seven children together. One of his children, Clarence Mitchell IV, also followed in his footsteps. Clarence IV served in both the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland State Senate. He also hosted a radio show called The C4 Show on WBAL radio.
Clarence Mitchell III passed away on October 11, 2012, in Randallstown, Maryland.
