Clarksville is a small town in Virginia, a state in the United States. It is located in Mecklenburg County, close to Virginia's southern border. In 2010, about 1,139 people lived there.
Clarksville is special because it's Virginia's only town right on a lake. This lake is called Kerr Lake, or sometimes Buggs Island Lake. It's a huge lake, about 50,000 acres (200 square kilometers) big! People love to go boating and fishing there. You can catch different kinds of fish like catfish and largemouth bass.
Many buildings in downtown Clarksville are very old, from the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s. Because of these historic buildings, the downtown area is recognized as a special Historic District. This means it's protected and important for its history.
Every July, Clarksville hosts the Virginia Lake Festival, also known as "Lakefest." This big event brings around 80,000 visitors to the town. It ends with an amazing fireworks show over the lake. The festival has been named one of the "Top Twenty Festivals In The Southeast" many times!

Clarksville's Past
For hundreds of years, the land where Clarksville now stands was home to the Occaneechi Native Americans. They were important because they controlled where several trading paths met. The Eno-Occoneechee tribe today are direct descendants of these original people.
Clarksville was the very first town in Mecklenburg County to become officially recognized. It was named in 1818 after its founder, Clark Royster. Many settlers moved to the area quickly. They liked the mild weather and the good soil for growing tobacco.
By 1832, Clarksville was one of the fastest-growing towns in Virginia. The Clarksville Tobacco Market became very important. A company was even created to transport tobacco by river to Petersburg, a major port city. Later, a special road and then a railroad were built to help move the tobacco.
By 1848, Clarksville was famous for its tobacco. It was a big center for selling and making tobacco products. In 1860, one factory in Clarksville, the R. H. Moss and Brothers Factory, made more tobacco than any other place in Virginia or the Carolinas! Today, Clarksville is proud to say it has the oldest continuous tobacco market in the world.
Several historic places in Clarksville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Clarksville Historic District, Cedar Grove, Prestwould, Clark Royster House, Sunnyside, Patrick Robert Sydnor Log Cabin, and Judge Henry Wood, Jr. House. These places help tell the story of the town's past.
