Claude Sautet (born February 23, 1924 – died July 22, 2000) was a famous French film director and writer. He created many movies that showed what life was like in France after World War II. He often worked with his favorite actress, Romy Schneider, making five films together.

About Claude Sautet

Claude Sautet was born in Montrouge, France. Before making movies, he studied painting and sculpture. Later, he went to a film school in Paris. This is where he started his career, even working as a television producer for a while.

His first movie, called Hello Smile! (Bonjour Sourire in French), came out in 1956.

Becoming a Famous Director

Claude Sautet became well-known around the world with his film The Things of Life (1970). He wrote and directed this movie, just like most of his later films. The movie starred Michel Piccoli and was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It also helped Romy Schneider become very popular again. She went on to star in many more of his movies.

One of Sautet's most praised films is Vincent, François, Paul and the Others (1974). This movie shows four middle-aged friends who meet every weekend. They talk about their lives and problems. Famous actors like Yves Montand, Gérard Depardieu, and Stéphane Audran were in this film, along with Michel Piccoli. Many people think it's one of the best movies he made with Michel Piccoli.

Sautet also had great success with his film Mado in 1976.

Award-Winning Films

His movie A Simple Story (1978) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This means it was considered one of the best non-English movies in the world. Romy Schneider starred in it again, playing a woman in her 40s who was not happy with her life. She won the César Award for Best Actress for her amazing acting in this film. The César Award is like the French Oscar.

In the 1980s, Claude Sautet made two more films. These were Waiter! (1983), a drama about a middle-aged waiter, and the comedy A Few Days with Me (1988).

Claude Sautet won important awards for his later films. He received the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival for A Heart in Winter (1992). He also won the César Award for Best Director for this film. He won the César Award again for Nelly and Mr. Arnaud (1995). Both of these movies starred the actress Emmanuelle Béart.

Besides directing his own movies, Claude Sautet also wrote screenplays for other directors.

Claude Sautet passed away in Paris in 2000. He was buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery.
