About Claudi Arimany
Claudi Arimany first studied business at ESADE while playing the flute just for fun. At that time, he liked jazz music more than classical music. He didn't think he would become a professional musician. He took lessons from Josep Maria Ruera, a pianist, and Salvador Gratacós in Barcelona.
Gratacós helped his students love the flute and its music. He also invited famous flute masters like Alain Marion and Jean-Pierre Rampal to teach when they visited Barcelona. This is how Arimany met Rampal. After seeing Rampal perform at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Arimany decided to focus on music. He continued his studies in Nice and Paris with teachers like Georgy Sebok, Alain Marion, and Raymond Guiot. In 1982, he earned his diploma in Paris with top honors.
Today, Claudi Arimany lives near his hometown in Llerona (Les Franqueses del Vallès). The local music school there is named after him. He also teaches at the "Josep Maria Ruera" Granollers Music School.
Claudi's Musical Journey
Claudi Arimany often performs as a solo artist. He has also shared the stage with many other famous musicians. Some of these include Maxence Larrieu, Aurèle Nicolet, Mischa Maisky, and Victoria de los Angeles.
His amazing flute playing has taken him to many famous concert halls around the world. He has played at the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He has also performed at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
Claudi Arimany has also played with many leading orchestras. These include the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the China National Symphony Orchestra, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra.
Working with Jean-Pierre Rampal
Jean-Pierre Rampal was not only a great flautist but also a dedicated teacher. He helped many young musicians learn about the flute. Claudi Arimany studied with Rampal and later began working with him in the late 1980s. They understood each other very well musically. Rampal once said that Arimany was so good, he couldn't tell who was playing when they recorded together!
Their last album together was released in 1999. It featured music by Mozart and Franz Anton Hoffmeister. Before that, Rampal wrote about Arimany's talent. He called Claudi Arimany "one of the greatest flautists of his generation." Rampal admired how Arimany used his skills to play with great feeling.
Claudi Arimany also inherited many of Rampal's musical items. This includes some of his flutes and music books. The most special item is Rampal's famous gold flute, which Arimany uses in his concerts. Claudi Arimany has also been a judge at the International JP Rampal Flute Competition in Paris.
Finding Lost Music
Besides performing, Claudi Arimany spends a lot of time finding and sharing music by forgotten composers. Sometimes, very talented musicians are not remembered because bigger names become more famous. Arimany is interested in the music of these "hidden" composers.
In 1986, he wanted to record music by Johann Sebastian Bach's students. A German record company wasn't interested because there were already many Bach recordings. So, Arimany worked with other musicians, Alexander Schmoller (cello) and Michael Gruber (harpsichord). They found and recorded almost unknown pieces by German musicians who studied with Bach. This project resulted in the 1986 album Virtuose Flötenmusik - Schüler der Bach.

Arimany also looked for Catalan composers who wrote for the flute. He found the work of Joan Baptista Pla (1720–1762). Pla was a contemporary of Mozart and traveled all over Europe. In the early 1990s, original music by Pla was found in Germany. Arimany added these pieces to his performances. He later recorded two CDs with Pla's music. One was with Jean-Pierre Rampal, and another was with the English Chamber Orchestra.
He also discovered the music of François Devienne. Devienne was a popular composer and performer in his time, even called "the French Mozart". He also helped start the Conservatoire de Paris. However, his music was forgotten for a long time. In the mid-1990s, Arimany found old editions of Devienne's flute concertos. He has recorded four CDs with Devienne's fourteen concertos for flute and orchestra. Arimany describes this music as "natural, clear, elegant, and melancholic."
In 2020, Claudi Arimany released a large collection of music for flute by the brothers Albert Franz Doppler and Karl Doppler. This was the result of his research in conservatories and libraries across Europe since 2007. The collection includes 12 CDs with 97 pieces, and 64 of them were recorded for the very first time.
