Clay City is a small, quiet community located in Baldwin County, Alabama, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county government.

History of Clay City

Clay City got its name because of the large amounts of clay found in the area. This natural resource was very important to the community's early development.

Clay and Pottery Works

For many years, Clay City was a busy center for making bricks and tiles. These materials were used to build homes and other structures. For example, the tiles used in the old City Hall building in nearby Fairhope were made right here in Clay City.

The first place that made pottery in Clay City opened way back in 1850. It was built right on the banks of the Fish River. This pottery works made clay items for 50 years, closing down in 1900.

Later, in 1940, another pottery business started up in Clay City. You can still see the remains of its kilns today. Kilns are special ovens used to bake clay at very high temperatures, turning it into strong pottery, bricks, or tiles. These old kilns are a cool reminder of Clay City's past.
