A Look Back: Claybank's History
Claybank used to be an important stop on the Chicago Great Western Railway. This railway line connected Red Wing and Rochester, Minnesota.
Special railway tracks, called "rail spurs," stretched two miles east from Claybank. These tracks led to large holes in the ground called "clay pits." Here, workers dug up clay. This clay was then shipped by train to the stoneware factories in Red Wing. Stoneware is a type of pottery made from clay.
Claybank also had its own post office. It opened in 1890 and served the community until 1904.
