Clayton Graham Blackmore (born 23 September 1964) is a Welsh former footballer. He played for the Welsh national team. Blackmore was known for being a tough player who could score from free kicks. He was also a utility player, meaning he could play well in many different positions. He was great in defense but could also play in midfield.

Blackmore started his professional career at Manchester United in 1982. He had been part of their youth team since he was young. He played for Manchester United for twelve years. After that, he moved to Middlesbrough. He also had short times playing for other clubs like Barnsley and Notts County. Later, he played for Bangor City for a long time. He even became a player-manager there. Blackmore played for Wales 39 times between 1985 and 1997. He retired from playing in 2010.

Playing for Clubs

Manchester United Years

Clayton Blackmore joined Manchester United when he was just 14 years old. He was part of their youth team. In 1982, he played in the final of the FA Youth Cup.

He played his first game for Manchester United on 16 May 1984. The manager, Ron Atkinson, gave him his chance. In the 1985–86 season, he started to play more often. He scored three goals in 12 league games. He got a regular spot in the team during the 1987–88 season. By then, Alex Ferguson was the manager. Blackmore played 22 league games and scored three goals that season. The next year, 1988–89, he played even more, appearing 28 times in the league.

He played 35 league games for United in the 1990–91 season. He played 33 games in the 1991–92 season.

Blackmore was part of the team that won the FA Cup in 1990. The next year, he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with United. He was usually the left-back during the 1990–91 season. However, when Paul Parker joined, Denis Irwin moved to left-back. Blackmore then played in different positions, showing how versatile he was. He often played at right-back when Parker was injured.

Blackmore also won a Premier League title medal in 1992–93. By this time, he wasn't playing every game. He often came on as a substitute. He would fill in as a full-back or on the wings when he did start. He had some injuries, which meant he couldn't play in the 1993–94 season. Also, there was a lot of competition for places in the team.

In the past, players didn't always wear the same shirt number. Because Blackmore could play in so many positions, he wore almost every shirt number from 2 to 11. He also wore numbers from 12 to 16 when he came on as a substitute. When squad numbers were first used in the Premier League in 1993–94, he was given the number 15. However, he didn't play any first-team games that season.

Time at Middlesbrough

In the 1994–95 season, Clayton Blackmore moved to Middlesbrough. He joined them for free after playing for Manchester United for over ten years. He was signed by the new player-manager, Bryan Robson, who also came from Manchester United. Blackmore helped Middlesbrough win promotion to the Premier League in his first season. They won the Division One title. He played in 30 league games and scored two goals. He also played in Middlesbrough's 1997 FA Cup Final against Chelsea, which they lost. While at Middlesbrough, he had a short loan spell at Bristol City.

Later Career Clubs

After Middlesbrough, Blackmore had short periods playing for Barnsley and Notts County. He then moved to non-league football. He played for Leigh RMI and then for Bangor City. He played for Bangor City for a long time, making 176 league appearances. He also spent a season with Porthmadog, where he was a player-manager. He then moved to Neath Athletic in 2007. He played 22 more league games before he stopped playing football in 2010.

On 3 September 2018, Blackmore joined the coaching team at the Dynamo Brest Academy. He left the club in the summer of 2019.

Clayton Blackmore played for the Welsh national team 39 times. He made his first appearance for Wales on 26 February 1985. This was in a friendly game against Norway, which ended in a 1–1 draw. His last game for Wales was on 29 March 1997.
