Clayton Graham Blackmore (born on September 23, 1964) is a former professional footballer from Wales. He was known for being a tough player who could score amazing goals from free kicks. Clayton Blackmore started his professional football journey at Manchester United in 1982. He had been part of their youth team before that. After playing for Manchester United for twelve years, he moved to Middlesbrough. He also played for other teams like Bristol City, Barnsley, Notts County, and Leigh RMI. Playing Career Highlights
Starting at Manchester United
Clayton Blackmore joined Manchester United when he was just 14 years old. He was a schoolboy player with the club. In 1982, he reached the final of the FA Youth Cup, which is a big competition for young players.
His first game for Manchester United was on May 16, 1984. The manager, Ron Atkinson, gave him his debut in a league match against Nottingham Forest. In the 1985–86 season, he scored three goals in 12 league games. He started playing more regularly in the 1987–88 season when Alex Ferguson became the manager. That season, he played 22 league games and scored three goals. The next season, 1988–89, he played even more, appearing in 28 league matches.
He played 35 league games for United in the 1990–91 season and 33 games in the 1991–92 season.
Clayton was part of the team that won the FA Cup in 1990. The next year, he helped United win the European Cup Winners' Cup, which is a big European trophy. He was usually the team's left-back during the 1990–91 season. However, when Paul Parker joined the team, Denis Irwin moved to left-back. Clayton then often played in different positions, sometimes even as a right-back when Parker was injured.
Clayton Blackmore also won a Premier League title medal in the 1992–93 season. By this time, he was not playing every game. He often came on as a substitute or filled in at full-back or on the wings when he did start. He had some injuries, which meant he could not play in the 1993–94 season. Also, there was a lot of competition for places in the team.
In the past, players did not always have the same shirt number for every game. Because Clayton could play in so many different positions, he wore almost every shirt number from 2 to 11. He also wore numbers like 12 to 16 when he came on as a substitute. When squad numbers were introduced for the 1993–94 season, he was given the number 15. However, he did not play any first-team games that season due to injuries.
Time at Middlesbrough
In the 1994–95 season, Clayton joined Middlesbrough for free. He had spent over ten years at Old Trafford, Manchester United's stadium. He was signed by Bryan Robson, who had just become Middlesbrough's player-manager after leaving Manchester United. Clayton helped Middlesbrough win promotion to the Premier League in his first season. They won the Division One championship. He played in 30 league games and scored two goals for them. He also played in Middlesbrough's 1997 FA Cup Final match against Chelsea, which they lost. While at Middlesbrough, he also had a short loan period playing for Bristol City.
Later Football Career
After Middlesbrough, Clayton had short times playing for Barnsley and Notts County. He then moved into non-league football, playing for teams like Leigh RMI and Bangor City.
In September 2018, Clayton Blackmore joined the coaching staff at the Dynamo Brest Academy. He left the club in the summer of 2019.
Playing for Wales
Clayton Blackmore played for the Wales national team 39 times. His first game for Wales was on February 26, 1985, in a friendly match against Norway. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. His last game for Wales was on March 29, 1997.
