The Clearwater Mountains are a big part of the famous Rocky Mountains. You can find them in the northern part of Idaho, in the western United States. These mountains are located between the Salmon River and the Bitterroot Range. They cover a huge area of about 8,499 square miles (22,010 km²).

Exploring the Clearwater Mountains
The Clearwater Mountains are a large mountain range. Like many big ranges, they are made up of smaller sections. These smaller sections are called subranges. The Clearwater Mountains have three main subranges. Each one has its own special features.
North Clearwater Mountains
The North Clearwater Mountains are the part of the range furthest to the north. They are also the shortest of the three subranges. This area covers about 4,321 square miles (11,191 km²).
Only two of its peaks reach above 7,000 feet (2,134 meters). These are Pot Mountain, which is 7,139 feet (2,176 m) tall, and Black Mountain, which is 7,077 feet (2,157 m) tall.
Selway Crags
The Selway Crags are located right in the middle of the North and South Clearwaters. They are also in the middle when it comes to how high their peaks are. The Selway Crags cover about 885 square miles (2,292 km²).
Its two highest peaks are Grave Peak and McConnell Mountain. Grave Peak stands at 8,282 feet (2,524 m) tall. McConnell Mountain reaches 7,424 feet (2,263 m) high.
South Clearwater Mountains
The South Clearwater Mountains are the part of the range furthest to the south. This subrange is also the tallest of the three. It has six different peaks that are over 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) high! The South Clearwaters cover about 3,292 square miles (8,526 km²).
The two highest peaks in this area are Stripe Mountain and Salmon Mountain. Stripe Mountain is the tallest, reaching an amazing 9,001 feet (2,743 m). Salmon Mountain is also very tall at 8,943 feet (2,726 m).
