Clematis fremontii is a flowering plant in the buttercup family. It is often called Fremont's leather flower. This plant is special because it grows only in the United States.
You can find it in different areas across the central and southeastern states. In the mid-2000s, new groups of these plants were found in Tennessee and Georgia. Some other names for this plant are Fremont's crowsfoot and rattleweed.
What it Looks Like
This plant has stems that can grow up to 70 centimeters (about 28 inches) tall. But usually, they are shorter, between 15 and 40 centimeters (6 to 16 inches). The stems are a bit hairy.
Its leaves feel a bit like leather. They are oval-shaped and can be up to 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) long and 11 centimeters (4.3 inches) wide.
The Flower
Clematis fremontii has a single, bell-shaped flower. It looks like an urn. The flower has bluish or purple parts called sepals. These sepals are hairy and have greenish tips.
Fruits and Seeds
After the flower blooms, it produces long fruits. These fruits are called achenes. They grow together in a cluster.
Where it Grows
You can usually find Clematis fremontii growing in places with limestone soil. It often grows in open, grassy areas called glades or prairies. Sometimes, people even plant this unique flower in their gardens!
