Playing in the NBA
Clemon Johnson was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1978 NBA draft. He was the 22nd pick in the second round. He played for the Trail Blazers for one season before moving to the Indiana Pacers.
Joining the Philadelphia 76ers
In February 1983, Johnson was traded from the Indiana Pacers to the Philadelphia 76ers. He famously said that joining the 76ers was "like going from the outhouse to the White House." This meant he felt like he was moving from a less successful team to a much better one.
That same season, the Philadelphia 76ers won the NBA Championship. Johnson was a reserve player on that championship team, meaning he came off the bench to help his teammates. He played a total of 761 games during his 10 seasons in the NBA.
Playing Overseas
After his NBA career ended in 1988, Clemon Johnson continued to play basketball overseas. He played in Italy for several years, extending his professional career until 1993. He played for teams like Knorr Bologna and Lotus / Bialetti Montecatini.
Life After Playing Basketball
After retiring from professional basketball, Clemon Johnson returned to Tallahassee, Florida. He became an economics teacher and also coached high school basketball. His son, Chad, also played college basketball at the University of Pittsburgh.
Coaching Career
In May 2007, Clemon Johnson became the interim head coach for the University of Alaska Fairbanks men's basketball team, known as the Alaska Nanooks. He coached the team for four seasons, from 2007 to 2011.
In May 2011, Johnson was named the head coach at his old college, Florida A&M. He coached the Florida A&M Rattlers for three seasons. He finished his coaching time there with a record of 32 wins and 64 losses. He left the position in 2014.
