Cleopatra IV was an ancient Egyptian queen who lived a fascinating but short life. She was part of the powerful Ptolemaic dynasty, a family of rulers who governed Egypt for many years. Cleopatra IV was queen of Egypt for a brief time, sharing the throne with her brother and husband, Ptolemy IX. Later, she became a queen in Syria by marrying King Antiochus IX. Her story involves royal marriages, political changes, and journeys across ancient lands.

Who Was Cleopatra IV?

Cleopatra IV was a princess born into the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled ancient Egypt. She was born sometime between 138 and 135 BC. Her parents were Ptolemy VIII Physcon, a king of Egypt, and Cleopatra III of Egypt, a powerful queen. She had several brothers and sisters, including Ptolemy IX Lathyros, Ptolemy X Alexander I, Cleopatra Selene I, and Tryphaena.

Early Life and Royal Marriage

In ancient Egypt, it was sometimes a tradition for royal family members to marry each other to keep power within the family. Cleopatra IV married her brother, Ptolemy IX, around 119 or 118 BC, when he was still a prince. This marriage made her a queen consort, meaning she was the wife of the ruling king.

Cleopatra IV might have been the mother of two important figures: Ptolemy XII Auletes and Ptolemy of Cyprus. However, historians are not completely sure about this, as another woman might have been their mother.

A Queen in Egypt

Cleopatra IV's time as queen of Egypt was short. Around 115 BC, her mother, Queen Cleopatra III, made a big decision. She arranged for Cleopatra IV and Ptolemy IX to separate. After this, Cleopatra III chose Cleopatra IV's sister, Cleopatra Selene I, to marry Ptolemy IX instead.

Queen Cleopatra III was a very strong ruler. She wanted to keep a lot of power for herself. Because of this, she usually did not allow her daughters, like Cleopatra IV and Cleopatra Selene I, to be official co-rulers. Instead, they held the important position of queen consort, supporting their husbands.

After her death, Cleopatra IV was honored in a special way. She was added to the list of deified Ptolemies. This meant she was seen as a goddess, known as Thea Philadelphos, which means "brother-loving goddess."

Life in Syria and a Sad End

After her separation from Ptolemy IX, Cleopatra IV left Egypt. She traveled to Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. There, she met and married Antiochus IX Cyzicenus, who was a king in Syria.

Cleopatra IV was a determined woman. She managed to convince an army that belonged to Antiochus IX's half-brother, Antiochus VIII Grypus, to follow her. She then brought this army to her new husband, Antiochus IX, to help him in his own conflicts.

This created a difficult situation. Antiochus VIII Grypus, who was married to Cleopatra IV's sister Tryphaena, fought against Antiochus IX. Sadly, Cleopatra IV's sister Tryphaena was very unhappy about this. She arranged for Cleopatra IV to be harmed, which led to her death in 112 BC. This tragic event happened in a sacred place called Daphne, near the city of Antioch.

Historians also suggest that Cleopatra IV might have been the mother of another Seleucid king, Antiochus X Eusebes, from her marriage to Antiochus IX.
