Biography
Queen of Egypt
Cleopatra IV was born between 138 and 135 BC. Her parents were Ptolemy VIII Physcon and Cleopatra III of Egypt. She had several brothers and sisters, including Ptolemy IX, Ptolemy X, Cleopatra Selene I, and Tryphaena.
Around 119 or 118 BC, Cleopatra IV married her brother, Ptolemy IX. At that time, he was still a prince. It is thought that Cleopatra IV might have been the mother of two future rulers, Ptolemy XII Auletes and Ptolemy of Cyprus. However, it's also possible that another woman was their mother.
In 115 BC, Cleopatra III, who was Cleopatra IV's mother, made her and Ptolemy IX get a divorce. After the divorce, Cleopatra III arranged for Ptolemy IX to marry Cleopatra IV's sister, Cleopatra Selene.
Queen of Syria and Her Death
After her divorce, Cleopatra IV left Egypt. She traveled to Cyprus. There, she married Antiochus IX Cyzicenus, who was a king in Syria. She even convinced some soldiers from her half-brother's army to join her and Antiochus IX.
Antiochus IX's half-brother was King Antiochus VIII Grypus of Syria. Grypus fought against Cyzicenus. Grypus was married to Cleopatra IV's sister, Tryphaena. Sadly, Tryphaena decided that Cleopatra IV should die. Despite her husband's protests, Tryphaena ordered soldiers to kill Cleopatra IV. This happened in a special holy place called the sanctuary of Daphne, in the city of Antioch.
Some historians also believe that Cleopatra IV might have been the mother of Antiochus X Eusebes. He later became a king in Syria. Antiochus X eventually married Cleopatra IV's younger sister, Cleopatra Selene. This made Cleopatra Selene both his stepmother and possibly his aunt.
