Cleorina is a group of small, often shiny beetles. They are a type of leaf beetle, which means they usually eat plants. These beetles belong to a larger family of beetles called Eumolpinae. You can find Cleorina beetles in places like Australia and different parts of Asia.
One special species, Cleorina modiglianii, lives in Sumatra. Scientists once thought about using it to help control a big, wild plant called giant bramble (Rubus alceifolius). This plant was causing problems in La Réunion because it was growing too much. Using one living thing to control another is called biological control. However, after testing, scientists found that Cleorina modiglianii might eat other important plants too. Because of this, it was not used to control the giant bramble.
What are Cleorina Beetles?
Cleorina beetles are part of the huge group of insects called beetles. They are known for their often metallic or shiny colors. Like all insects, they have six legs and a body divided into three main parts: a head, a chest area (thorax), and a belly (abdomen).
These beetles are sometimes called "leaf beetles" because many of them feed on the leaves of plants. They can be found in various habitats, from forests to gardens, depending on the specific plant they like to eat.
Different Types of Cleorina Beetles
There are many different kinds of Cleorina beetles. Each one has its own unique features, like slightly different colors or sizes. Scientists give each type a special scientific name to tell them apart. Here are some of the known species:
