Clifton is a small, unincorporated community located in Mason County, West Virginia, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
Clifton is situated right on the eastern bank of the Ohio River. It's about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of a town called Mason. If you look across the Ohio River from Clifton, you'll see Middleport, Ohio.
For many years, Clifton had its own post office, which helped people send and receive mail. However, this post office closed its doors on May 24, 1997.
What's in a Name?
The community of Clifton got its name from the tall, steep cliffs that are found near where the original town was built. It's a simple name that tells you something important about the area's natural features!
