Discovering Middleport's Past
Middleport was founded in the 1820s. This was a time when Meigs County was growing very fast. One of the first businesses here was a cotton mill. This was interesting because cotton wasn't grown nearby.
The village has had a few different names over the years. It was first called "Sheffield." Later, it was also known as "Coalport" and "Salisbury." The name "Middleport" refers to its special location. It's halfway between the cities of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati on the Ohio River.
Some buildings in Middleport are very old and important. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the John Downing Jr. House, the William H. Grant House, and the Middleport Public Library.
