Clifton East was a special area, like a neighborhood, in the city of Bristol, England. It was one of 35 such areas, called 'wards', that helped organize the city. Think of a ward as a local district that helps the city council manage different parts of the city.
As its name suggests, Clifton East was the eastern part of the Clifton area. This ward doesn't exist anymore. It was changed in May 2016 and mostly became a new ward called Clifton Down. A small part of Clifton East also joined the nearby Clifton ward.
Many students lived in Clifton East. About 30% of the people living there were aged 20–24. This is much higher than the national average, which is about 9% for that age group.
What Was in Clifton East?
Clifton East was home to several interesting places. One important spot was Clifton Down railway station. This station helped people travel around Bristol and beyond.
Another well-known place was the Clifton Lido. A lido is an outdoor swimming pool, and this one was built way back in 1850. It closed for a while in 1990 but was reopened in November 2008 after being updated.
Whiteladies Road
A main street running through Clifton East was Whiteladies Road. This road was busy with many shops and offices. You could also find some houses there.
The way houses were numbered on Whiteladies Road was a bit unusual. Normally, odd numbers are on one side and even numbers on the other. But here, even numbers were on the left and odd numbers on the right as you headed out from the city center.
The ABC Cinema was also on Whiteladies Road. In the 1990s, it was changed into offices and a gym. However, there are now plans to open it as a cinema again, bringing movies back to the area.
In 2011 and 2012, the Bristol City Council made some changes to Whiteladies Road. These changes affected how cars drove and how people walked. Some local people had different opinions about these changes.
