History of Coal Valley

Early Settlers and Mining

The first people to settle in Coal Valley were trappers and farmers. They came from countries like Wales, England, Ireland, Germany, and Sweden. William and Charles Bailey are thought to be the very first settlers. They built the first house in what is now Coal Valley. They might have also started a small coal mine, which could have been the first coal found in the area.

In 1856, the Coal Valley Mining Company was started. The people who created this company were Holmes Hakes, Charles Buford, S. S. Guyer, Ben Harper, and N. B. Buford. They are the ones who gave the community its name, "Coal Valley," because of the coal found there.

Coal mining was very important in Coal Valley from the 1850s to the mid-1870s. Other mining companies also moved into the area over time. However, by 1942, coal mining in and around Coal Valley had completely stopped.

Forming the Village

In March 1876, the people of Coal Valley voted to officially form the Village of Coal Valley. The vote passed, and on April 22, 1876, the first Board of Trustees was created. This board helps manage the village. H. B. Sudlow was chosen as the first president of the board. Harvey Clark was appointed as the first Constable, which is like a police officer.

Community Buildings and Services

In May 1892, citizens asked for a town hall to be built. The land for the building was bought from Gustave Krapp Sr. Mr. Johnson of Orion was hired to build it. The new hall looked exactly like Orion's town hall. Construction started in September and was finished by Thanksgiving. In January 1893, the town hall was officially ready. The total cost was less than $3,000.

In April 1900, the Village Board bought a fire engine and a hose cart. These cost $875. In November 1900, they bought land and built a one-story fire station. This helped the community be safer from fires.

Highways and Schools

In 1929, Highway 150 was built through the Village of Coal Valley. This made travel much easier. In 1933, the highway was extended further east to Orion.

A new high school, Coal Valley High School, was built in 1939. It cost $70,000 to build. That fall, 46 students enrolled in the school. The first students to graduate from this new high school were Ruth Schroeder, Evelyn Martin, Mary Kepple, Florence Robinson, Raymond Johnson, Harlan Raub, Robert Anderson, Sydney Bradford, and Francis Creger. In 1952, Coal Valley High School closed. The building then became a junior high school. High school students from Coal Valley started attending the new high school in Moline.
