The John Deere Classic is a big professional golf tournament. It is part of the PGA Tour, which is where the best golfers compete. This tournament happens every year in July. It's usually played just before another famous golf event, The Open Championship. You can find the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. This area is known as the Quad Cities.

History of the Tournament

How the Tournament Started

The tournament began in 1971. Back then, it was called the Quad Cities Open. It started as a "satellite event" for the PGA Tour. This means it was a smaller event that helped players get ready for bigger tournaments.

In 1972, it became an official PGA Tour event. This made it a much more important competition. A famous TV host, Ed McMahon, helped host the tournament from 1975 to 1979.

Who Sponsored the Tournament?

Over the years, different companies have sponsored the event. Sponsors help pay for the tournament. Some past sponsors include Miller Brewing Company (from 1982 to 1985) and Hardee's (from 1986 to 1994). Since 1999, John Deere has been the main sponsor. That's why it's now called the John Deere Classic!

Where the Tournament Has Been Played

The tournament has been held at a few different golf courses. From 1971 to 1974, it was played at Crow Valley Country Club in Davenport, Iowa. Then, from 1975 to 1999, it moved to Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois. Since the year 2000, the tournament has been held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis.

Famous Moments and Players

The John Deere Classic has seen some exciting moments. In 2005 and 2006, a young golfer named Michelle Wie played in the tournament. She was a teenager at the time and got special invitations to play. This brought a lot of attention to the event.

In 2013, Jordan Spieth won the tournament. He was only 19 years old! This made him the youngest player to win a PGA Tour event since 1931. That's a really long time!

Getting Ready for The Open Championship

The John Deere Classic is often the last chance for a golfer to qualify for The Open Championship. If a player finishes in the top five at the John Deere Classic and isn't already qualified, they can earn a spot in The Open.

To help golfers who want to play in The Open, the John Deere Classic does something special. Since 2008, they have offered a special plane ride. This plane leaves the Quad Cities on Sunday night after the tournament. It flies players directly to Britain, where The Open is often held. This helps them get there quickly and rest up for the next big event.

Tournament Highlights

Here are some memorable moments from the John Deere Classic:

  • 1971: Deane Beman, who later became the PGA Tour commissioner, won the very first tournament.
  • 1972: Deane Beman won again! This was the first year the tournament was an official PGA Tour event.

  • 2005: Teenage golf star Michelle Wie played in the tournament for the first time.
