The John Deere Classic is a big professional golf tournament. It's part of the PGA Tour, which is where the best golfers play. This tournament happens every year in July. It takes place at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, which is in a place called the Quad Cities. It's usually played just before another very famous golf event, The Open Championship.

The Story of the Tournament
How the John Deere Classic Started
The tournament began in 1971. Back then, it was called the Quad Cities Open. It started as a smaller "satellite event" on the PGA Tour. This means it was connected to the main tour but not yet a full official event.
In 1972, it became an official PGA Tour event. At first, it was played in the early autumn. Then, in 1974, it moved to mid-July. A famous TV host named Ed McMahon helped host the tournament from 1975 to 1979.
Who Has Sponsored the Tournament?
Over the years, different companies have helped sponsor the event. These sponsors include Miller Brewing Company (from 1982 to 1985) and Hardee's (from 1986 to 1994). Since 1999, the well-known company John Deere has been the main sponsor. That's why it's now called the John Deere Classic!
Where the Tournament Has Been Played
The tournament has been held at a few different golf courses.
- From 1971 to 1974, it was at Crow Valley Country Club in Davenport, Iowa.
- From 1975 to 1999, it moved to Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois.
- Since 2000, the tournament has been played at the TPC Deere Run course in Silvis.
Famous Moments and Players
The John Deere Classic has seen some exciting moments.
- In 2005 and 2006, a young golfer named Michelle Wie played in the tournament. She was a teenager and got special invitations to play. This brought a lot of attention to the event.
- In 2013, Jordan Spieth won the tournament. He was only 19 years old, making him the youngest golfer to win a PGA Tour event since 1931! He won the tournament again two years later.
Helping Golfers Get to The Open
The John Deere Classic is often the last chance for a golfer to qualify for The Open Championship. If a player finishes in the top five and isn't already qualified, they can earn a spot in The Open. To help golfers get there, the John Deere Classic has offered a special charter flight since 2008. This flight leaves the Quad Cities on Sunday night and arrives in Britain the next morning. It makes it easier for players to compete in both tournaments.
Tournament Highlights
- 1971: Deane Beman, who later became the PGA Tour commissioner, won the very first tournament.
- 1972: Deane Beman won again, making him the first back-to-back champion. This was the first year it was an official PGA Tour event.
- 1979: Golf legend Sam Snead made history. He shot a score of 67 in the second round, which was his exact age! He then shot a 66 in the final round.
- 2000: Michael Clark II won the first John Deere Classic played at the new TPC Deere Run course.
- 2005: Teenage golf star Michelle Wie played in the tournament for the first time. She received a special invitation.
- 2011: Steve Stricker became the first golfer to win the John Deere Classic three years in a row.
- 2013: 19-year-old Jordan Spieth became the youngest player to win a PGA Tour event in many years. He won the John Deere Classic again in 2015.
