History of Coalfield
How Coalfield Got Its Name
Coalfield was first called "Ruffner's Station." This name came from Shack Ruffner, an early settler. He built a mill in the area a long time ago.
The name "Coalfield" was chosen because of the community's history with coal mining. People used to dig for coal here. There were even two mining areas called Coalfield Camp No. 1 and Coalfield Camp No. 2.

Coalfield is found in Tennessee. It sits between two other towns: Wartburg and Oliver Springs. You can find it along Tennessee State Route 62.
To the west of Coalfield, you'll find Frozen Head State Park. This park is a great place for outdoor activities. The community of Joyner, Tennessee is also nearby.

Coalfield School: Home of the Yellow Jackets
The main school in the community is Coalfield School. It is a public school run by Morgan County Schools. The school teaches students from pre-kindergarten all the way to grade 12.
In the 2018-2019 school year, about 490 students attended Coalfield School. There were 41 students in the 12th grade. The school has about 31 full-time teachers. The mascot for Coalfield School is the Yellow Jacket!
