Cobb is a small community in Lake County, California, United States. It's called a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's a special area defined for gathering population information. Cobb is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of Whispering Pines. It sits high up, at an elevation of about 2,631 feet (802 m) above sea level. In 2020, about 1,295 people lived in Cobb.

History of Cobb, California

Cobb is named after John Cobb, who settled in the area, known as Cobb Valley, way back in 1853. The first post office in Cobb opened in 1911, helping the community connect with the rest of the world.

A Big Fire in 2015

In September 2015, a large wildfire called the Valley Fire caused a lot of damage. Many homes in the Cobb community were sadly destroyed by this fire.

Geography and Climate of Cobb

Cobb is located along State Highway 175. It's at an elevation of about 2,600 ft (790 m).

The community covers an area of about 5.0 square miles (13 km2). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit being water. Cobb is in Lake County, which shares its borders with several other counties in California, including Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Glenn, Colusa, and Yolo.

Just south of Cobb, you'll find The Geysers Geothermal Field. This is a very important place where energy is created using heat from deep inside the Earth.

Education in Cobb

Cobb is proud of its local school! On November 20, 2009, Cobb School received a special award from the state of California called the "Governor’s Challenge Competition Award." This award recognized Cobb Mountain Elementary for its high Academic Performance Index (API) score of 881, which was the highest in the county at the time. This achievement also brought a $100,000 prize for the school to use for student enrichment programs.

Fun Things to Do in Cobb

Cobb Mountain used to be a very popular place for vacations and recreation from the 1870s to the 1970s. Today, it's still a place where people go to relax and enjoy nature.

  • Retreat Centers: You can find several spiritual retreat centers here, like The Mountain of Attention Meditation sanctuary and The Heart Consciousness Church Harbin Hot Springs.
  • Transcendental Meditation: In 1971, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced Transcendental Meditation (also known as TM) at a former resort called Hobergs. It later became The Maharishi Vedic School. Hobergs reopened in 2014 as a resort and spa.
  • Golf Courses: If you like golf, Cobb has two 9-hole golf courses: Cobb Mountain Golf and Adams Springs.
  • Outdoor Adventures: The local Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest is huge, with almost 4,000 acres (16 km2) of land. It's a great place for mountain biking, hunting, and hiking.

Highway 175, which runs through Cobb, was mentioned in the famous book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. It was described as one of the last highways the characters rode.
