The Story of Coffee Crisp
How Coffee Crisp Began
The idea for Coffee Crisp started in the United Kingdom in the 1930s. A company called Rowntree's made a chocolate bar called "Rowntree's Wafer Crisp." This bar then came to Canada and was named "Biscrisp."
In 1938, a new version of the Biscrisp was created. This one had a coffee flavour and was given the name Coffee Crisp. Many years later, in 1988, Nestlé bought Rowntree's Canadian business. This included the chocolate factory in Toronto where Coffee Crisp bars are still made today.
Different Flavours Over Time
Over the years, Coffee Crisp has had many different flavours! The first new flavour, "Coffee Crisp Orange," came out in 2001 for a short time. It was so popular that it came back again in 2002. That same year, a "Coffee Crisp Raspberry" flavour was also released.
In 2004 and again in 2006, "Coffee Crisp Café Caramel" was sold during the summer. A special "Coffee Crisp White" bar was launched in the autumn of 2006. From April to September 2005, you could find a maple-flavoured bar.
For much of the 2000s, you could also find "French Vanilla" and "Triple Mocha" Coffee Crisp bars. In 2005, small, coffee bean-shaped candies called "Coffee Crisp Beans" were introduced. There was even a "Coffee Crisp Yogurt" bar.
However, in January 2007, most of these different flavours were stopped. Only the original Coffee Crisp bar remained.
New Flavours and Treats
In 2009, a "Coffee Crisp 70% dark chocolate" bar was introduced. Around 2008 to 2010, the French Vanilla and Chocolatey Crunch versions became available again.
To celebrate Coffee Crisp's 75th anniversary in 2014, a "Coffee Crisp Latte" bar was released. More recently, in early 2021, a new "Coffee Crisp Double Double" flavour came out.
Besides chocolate bars, you can also find Coffee Crisp-flavoured ice cream bars and ice cream!
Where to Find Coffee Crisp
Availability Outside Canada
Many Canadians who live in other countries often miss Coffee Crisp because it's mostly sold in Canada. However, you can sometimes find Coffee Crisp in Australia at special candy shops.
For a while, Coffee Crisp was also sold in the United States. In 2006, Nestlé started selling it across the U.S. But in April 2009, Nestlé Canada stopped marketing it there. Soon after, in May 2009, another company started bringing Coffee Crisp into the U.S. market.
If you visit Walt Disney World in Florida, there's a shop at the Canadian section of Epcot that sells Coffee Crisp bars!
