Coins and postage stamps of Sealand facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Principality of Sealand is a very small, self-declared nation. It was founded on an old World War II fort in the North Sea. Even though it's not recognized by most countries, Sealand has created its own coins and stamps. These are mostly made for collectors around the world.

Sealand's Coins

Sealand has made many different coins over the years. They are called "Sealand Dollars" (SX$). These coins are not used for everyday shopping. Instead, they are special items for people who collect coins.

Many of Sealand's coins feature the Sealand Arms on one side. This is like a national symbol. The other side often shows an orca whale. Orcas are powerful sea creatures.

Some coins also show important people from Sealand. For example, there are coins with Princess Joan and Prince Roy, who were the founders of Sealand.

Here are a few examples of coins Sealand has made:

  • In 1972, a SX$10 coin was made with Princess Joan on one side and a sailing ship on the other.
  • In 1994, many coins were released in different values like SX$0.25, SX$0.5, SX$1, SX$2.5, and SX$5. These often featured the Sealand Arms and the Orca Whale. They were made from metals like bronze, silver, and gold.
  • Later coins, like a SX$25 coin from 2012, honored Prince Roy. Another SX$25 coin from 2017 celebrated Sealand's 50th anniversary.

A Rebel Coin

Once, a group that called itself the "Sealand government in exile" tried to take over Sealand. This group also made a special coin in 1992. It was a SX$100 coin. It showed their leader, Prime Minister Seiger, on one side and the Sealand Arms on the other. This coin is also a collector's item.

Just like coins, Sealand also creates its own postage stamps. These stamps are not typically used to mail letters around the world. They are mostly made for stamp collectors. Each series of stamps often has a special theme.

1969: Explorers

One of the first stamp series from 1969 featured famous explorers. These included:

1970 Stamps

In 1970, Sealand released stamps with themes like ships, and even a stamp featuring the pirate Edward Teach. There were also stamps showing different kinds of fish.

1975: International Woman's Year

To celebrate International Woman's Year in 1975, Sealand issued a series of stamps. These stamps showed different continents like Africa, Australia, Europe, Asia, and America. There was also a special SX$1 stamp featuring Joan I, who was Princess of Sealand.

1977: Sailing Ships

Another popular series from 1977 featured historic sailing ships. Each stamp showed a ship connected to a famous explorer. This series also included stamps with the Sealandic Coat of Arms, and portraits of Roy of Sealand and Joan of Sealand.

2010 Stamps

More recently, in 2010, Sealand released a few new stamps in different colors and values, like green, red, and blue.
