The Col. Samuel Campbell House is a really old and special house located on U.S. Route 1 in Cherryfield, Maine. It was built way back in 1883. This house is a great example of a building style called Queen Anne Victorian architecture, which was popular a long time ago. Because it's so important, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It's also a key part of the Cherryfield Historic District, which is a whole area with many historic buildings.

What Does the Samuel Campbell House Look Like?

The Samuel Campbell House is on the north side of US 1. It's near two other important houses: the Gen. Alexander Campbell House and the Frank Campbell House. This house is quite large, with 2 and a half stories. It's made of wood and has lots of fancy decorations. These decorations are typical of the Queen Anne style, which likes variety and rich details.

The front of the house faces south. It has a porch that goes all the way across the front. This porch is held up by cool, round columns. It also has fancy brackets and a railing with turned wooden pieces. The main entrance to the house is under a part of the roof that sticks out. To the left of the entrance, there's a wide, multi-sided section that goes up two stories. It has its own pointed roof section on top. A part of the house also extends towards the back, connecting to an old carriage house. This carriage house even has a small tower on its roof for air!

Who Was Colonel Samuel Campbell?

This amazing house was built in 1883 for a man named Colonel Samuel Campbell. He was the grandson of General Alexander Campbell, whose house is right next door. Samuel Campbell followed in his grandfather's footsteps. He was a very important leader in the Cherryfield community. He ran several businesses that dealt with lumber in the Narraguagus River valley. He also served on the Governor's Council from 1880 to 1882. This was a group of people who advised the state's governor.

The house was designed by a local architect named Charles A. Allen. He was well-known in Cherryfield for designing many of the town's most stylish and grand houses.
