The Gen. Alexander Campbell House is a special old house in Cherryfield, Maine. You can find it on United States Route 1. This house was built way back in 1790.

Who Was Alexander Campbell?

Alexander Campbell was born in Georgetown, Maine in 1731. He was involved in military actions from a young age. He served in the local militia during the French and Indian War. A militia was a group of citizens who could be called to serve as soldiers. He helped during a big battle in Quebec in 1759.

After 1768, he moved to Cherryfield. There, he started a very successful lumber mill. This helped the town grow.

During the American Revolutionary War, he was again active in the local militia. He helped defend Machias in a battle in 1777. He also took part in the Penobscot Expedition in 1779. Alexander Campbell was also active in politics. He reported to the government of Massachusetts about what was happening in eastern Maine. At that time, Maine was part of Massachusetts.

He built this beautiful house in 1790. Alexander Campbell passed away in 1807. His family later made the changes that gave the house its Victorian look.
