Colin Hampton (born September 1, 1888 – died January 17, 1968) was a Scottish professional footballer. He was a talented goalkeeper who played for several famous clubs. These included Chelsea and Crystal Palace in England. He also played for Motherwell and his hometown club Brechin City in Scotland. Colin even played one game for the Scottish League XI in 1912. He was also a brave soldier during the First World War, earning the Military Medal for his courage.

Colin Hampton: A Goalkeeper's Story
Colin Hampton was born in Brechin, Scotland. He started his football journey in his hometown. He played for youth teams like Brechin Arnot and Brechin Hearts. Later, he joined Brechin Rovers and then Brechin City. His second cousin, Harry Hampton, was also a footballer. They even played together at Brechin City.
From Football Pitch to Battlefield
In 1909, Colin joined Motherwell, a big club in Scotland. He played many games for them as a goalkeeper. In 1914, he moved to England to play for Chelsea. However, his football career was put on hold. The First World War began in 1914.
Serving in World War I
In August 1915, Colin Hampton joined the army. He became a gunner in the Motor Machine Gun Service. This unit used machine guns mounted on vehicles. He was promoted to corporal and later to sergeant. Colin served in a place called Mesopotamia, which is now part of Iraq.
In 1918, his armoured car was hit. Colin was taken as a prisoner by the Ottoman Army. Luckily, he and his fellow prisoners were released soon after. This happened when the war officially ended in November 1918. For his bravery during the war, Colin was given the Military Medal in 1919. He left the army in May 1919.
Life After Football
After the war, Colin returned to playing football. He continued with Chelsea until 1925. He then had short spells back at Brechin City and with Crystal Palace.
Once his football career ended, Colin started a new chapter. He ran a sweet shop in his hometown of Brechin. He also worked in a factory in Coventry, England. During the Second World War, he even served as a special constable. This meant he helped the police as a volunteer. Colin Hampton passed away in January 1968, at the age of 79.
