Collado Mediano is a charming town in the northwest of Spain. It's part of the Community of Madrid. In 2011, about 6,610 people lived there. The town is located 48 kilometers (about 30 miles) from Madrid, the capital city. It covers an area of 22.57 square kilometers (about 8.7 square miles). Collado Mediano sits at 1,032 meters (3,386 feet) above sea level, close to the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains.

Geography of Collado Mediano

This town is nestled in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. It is about 48 kilometers northwest of Madrid. Several roads, like the M-601, M623, and M621, pass through the town.

Collado Mediano has grown in a long line across a valley. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and small forests. The weather here can be quite cold in winter. Summers, however, are usually hot and sunny.

People have lived in Collado Mediano for a very long time. The earliest signs of people living here date back to the time of the Roman Empire. This was when the Romans were present in the Iberian Peninsula.

During the Middle Ages, the nearby city of Segovia had a big influence on the town. Collado Mediano officially became a "villa" (a type of town) in the year 1630. You can still find old military trenches in the area. These trenches are from the Spanish Civil War which happened in 1936.

A special symbol of the town is the "Cobañera." This is a natural rock formation. It looks like a triangle and is even shown on the town's coat of arms. At night, the Cobañera is lit up, making it a beautiful sight.

In the past, the people of Collado Mediano mostly worked in farming. They grew crops and raised animals. However, things have changed a lot over time.

  • Carlos Saura (2023; posthumous) was honored as an "Adoptive Son" of the town after he passed away.
