The collared sunbird (Hedydipna collaris) is a tiny, colorful bird that belongs to the sunbird family, called Nectariniidae. Sunbirds are small songbirds found in the Old World (meaning Africa, Asia, and Europe). They mostly eat nectar from flowers, but they also enjoy munching on insects, especially when they have young birds to feed. Interestingly, the collared sunbird mainly eats insects!

What Do Collared Sunbirds Look Like?
Collared sunbirds are really small, only about 9 to 10 centimeters (about 3.5 to 4 inches) long. They have special features that help them eat nectar. Their bills are short, thin, and curve downwards, which is perfect for reaching into flowers. They also have brush-tipped tongues that are shaped like tubes, helping them to slurp up nectar.
Male vs. Female
The adult male collared sunbird is quite flashy! Its upper body and head are a shiny, glossy green. It has a bright yellow belly and a thin, purple band across its chest.
The female collared sunbird is a bit less colorful than the male. She has a duller green color on her upper body and is completely yellow underneath.
Where Do They Live?
The collared sunbird is a very common bird found across most of sub-Saharan Africa. This means you can see them in many countries south of the Sahara Desert. They love to live in forests, especially those that are close to water.
Their Homes and Babies
These birds build amazing nests! They lay two or three eggs in a nest that hangs down from a tree branch. It's like a little swinging cradle for their babies.
Collared sunbirds are also known to be seasonal migrants within their home areas. This means they might move from one place to another depending on the season, looking for the best food and weather.
How Do They Fly and Eat?
Sunbirds are very quick flyers. They have short wings, which help them fly fast and straight. While many sunbird species can hover in the air like a hummingbird to drink nectar, collared sunbirds usually prefer to perch on a branch while they eat. This makes it easier for them to enjoy their meal!
