School Campuses
Morven Campus: Grades 8-12
The Morven campus is the oldest part of Collingwood School. It is located at 70 Morven Drive in the British Properties area of West Vancouver. This campus is home to students in Grades 8 and 9 (Middle School) and Grades 10-12 (Senior School).
The buildings used to be Glenmore Elementary School. That school closed in 1982. Even though parents, students, and teachers protested, the school closed because fewer students were enrolling and the education budget was smaller.
Since then, the Morven campus has grown and improved a lot. A big renovation was finished in 2014. This update added a theatre, a dance studio, and special rooms for band and choir. It also got a new library, a gymnasium, and weight training areas. There is also an athletics field, a cafeteria, and modern learning spaces. All these new areas are built around a central student commons. Morven campus is right next to Glenmore Park.
Wentworth Campus: Junior Kindergarten-Grade 7
The junior campus, also called the "Wentworth" campus, opened in 1997. It is located at 2605 Wentworth Avenue in the Cypress area of West Vancouver. This campus is close to Cypress Provincial Park.
The Wentworth campus is for all students in the Junior School, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. It also houses the first two years of Middle School, which are Grades 6 and 7. The school has two main sections. One section is for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. The other section is for Grades 6 and 7. The Grade 6 and 7 section has a full-sized gymnasium and two science labs.
What Students Learn
Collingwood School teaches the British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum for all grades. Besides these required courses, Collingwood also has its own special programs. These include the Collingwood Certificate program and the Four Strands approach. The school also offers many Advanced Placement courses. These are college-level courses that students can take in high school.
The Four Strands Approach
Collingwood School focuses on a concept called the Four Strands. These four areas are: Academics, Athletics, Service, and the Arts. All students must take part in activities from each of these strands. The school offers many extra activities to help students meet these requirements. Students who do very well in any of the four categories can receive awards.
The Collingwood Certificate
The Collingwood Certificate program sets higher goals for students. These goals are in addition to what the BC Ministry of Education requires. This program works with the Four Strands approach. It challenges students in their schoolwork and requires them to participate in sports. Students must also continue with arts activities and do community service. They also create a graduation portfolio and show good citizenship at school. Students who meet all these requirements receive the Collingwood Certificate diploma when they graduate.
Debating, Public Speaking, and Model UN
Collingwood has a very successful debating and public speaking program. Students from this program have won many competitions at provincial, national, and even international levels. For example, Sarah Mortazavi (Class of 2005) and Shakir Rahim (Class of 2007) both won the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships.
Every student, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, must write and present a speech each year. This can be a persuasive speech, a funny speech, or a dramatic monologue. These are part of the school's yearly public speaking competition.
The Morven campus also has a Model United Nations club. This club attends many conferences in the Lower Mainland area. In recent years, they have traveled to places like Washington, D.C., New York, and Berkeley.
Round Square Program
Collingwood is part of the international Round Square network of schools. This network aims to give students many different experiences. These experiences can be academic, physical, cultural, and spiritual. They help students learn more about the world.
Each year, Collingwood sends students on Round Square International Service trips around the world. Past destinations have included India, Belize, and Thailand. On these trips, students have helped build homes, schools, and systems to collect fresh water for communities. Students also get involved in local service projects, like working with Habitat for Humanity. Every year, a group of staff and students from Collingwood attends the International Round Square Conference.
In October 2008, Collingwood School helped host the international senior Round Square conference with Glenlyon Norfolk School. Students from other Round Square schools stayed with Collingwood families. The conference focused on "Creating Sustainable Communities – Local to Global."
