School Campuses
Collingwood School has two main campuses. Each campus is designed for different age groups.
Morven Campus
The Morven campus is the older of the two school sites. It is located at 70 Morven Drive in West Vancouver. This campus is home to students in Grades 8 and 9 (Middle School) and Grades 10-12 (Senior School).
The buildings used to be Glenmore Elementary School. That school closed in 1982. Since then, the Morven campus has been greatly improved. In 2014, it was fully rebuilt. New additions included a theatre, a dance studio, and music rooms. It also has a library, a gym, and a cafeteria. There are also modern learning spaces for students.
Wentworth Campus
The Wentworth campus opened in 1997. It is located at 2605 Wentworth Avenue in West Vancouver. This campus is for younger students. It houses all Junior School students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. It also includes Grades 6 and 7, which are the first two years of Middle School.
The Wentworth campus has two parts. One part is for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. The other part is for Grades 6 and 7. The Grades 6 and 7 section has a full-sized gym and two science labs.
What Students Learn
Collingwood School teaches the official curriculum from the British Columbia Ministry of Education. On top of that, Collingwood has its own special programs. These include the Collingwood Certificate program and the Four Strands approach. The school also offers many Advanced Placement courses. These courses are like university-level classes.
The Four Strands
Collingwood believes in something called the Four Strands. These are:
- Academics (schoolwork)
- Athletics (sports)
- Service (helping others)
- The Arts (like music, drama, and art)
All students must take part in activities from each of these four areas. Many after-school clubs and activities help students meet these requirements. Students who do very well in any of these areas can earn special awards.
Collingwood Certificate
The Collingwood Certificate program has higher goals than the basic BC Ministry of Education requirements. It works with the Four Strands approach. This program challenges students in many ways. It looks at their school grades and how much they participate in sports. It also checks their involvement in arts and community service. Students also create a graduation portfolio. This shows their overall good citizenship at the school. Students who meet all these goals get the Collingwood Certificate diploma when they graduate.
Debating and Public Speaking
Collingwood has a very strong debating and public speaking program. Students from this program have won many competitions. They have won at local, national, and even international levels.
Every student, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, gives a speech each year. They can choose to give a persuasive speech, a funny speech, or a dramatic monologue. This is part of the school's yearly public speaking contest. The Morven campus also has a Model United Nations club. This club attends conferences where students pretend to be delegates from different countries. They have even traveled to Washington, D.C., and New York for these events.
Round Square
Collingwood is part of an international group of schools called Round Square. This group wants to give students many different experiences. These experiences can be academic, physical, cultural, and spiritual. The goal is to help students understand the world better.
Each year, Collingwood sends students on Round Square International Service trips. They have gone to places like India, Belize, and Thailand. On these trips, students help communities. They have built homes, schools, and systems to collect fresh water. Students also help with local projects, like Habitat for Humanity. Collingwood also sends students and staff to the International Round Square Conference every year.
