Colusa was founded in 1850 by Charles D. Semple. He bought the land, which was part of a Mexican land grant. At first, he called the area Salmon Bend. The town was first named "Colusi."

The first post office opened in 1851. In 1854, the California government changed the town's name to "Colusa." The town grew quickly because it was on the Southern Pacific Railroad line. This made it an important stop for travelers.
