Colvill (also spelled Covill) was once a small community in Cook County, Minnesota. Today, it is known as an "extinct townsite" or a ghost town. This means people no longer live there as a community. It is located in the northeastern part of Minnesota, close to the beautiful shores of Lake Superior.
Where was Colvill?
Colvill was situated along Minnesota State Highway 61. This is a scenic road that follows the Lake Superior coastline. It was found between two other towns: Grand Marais and Grand Portage.
- Colvill was about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Grand Marais.
- It was about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Grand Portage.
A place called Kadunce River State Wayside area is also located near where Colvill used to be.
The Story of Colvill
Colvill was named after a brave soldier, Colonel William J. Colvill. He once lived on a homestead in the area. A homestead was a piece of land given by the government to people who promised to live on it and farm it.
The official area called Colvill Township was created in 1906. However, the community was abandoned during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Great Depression was a very difficult time when many people lost their jobs and homes. This caused many small towns to disappear.
Today, the stretch of Highway 61 where Colvill once stood is still active. You can find homes and vacation resorts there. The area also has the Colvill Town Hall and the Colvill Fire Department.
