Comines-Warneton is a city and a group of towns (called a municipality) in Wallonia, a region in Belgium. It's located in the Hainaut province. This city is right next to another city also called Comines, but that one is across the border in France.
As of January 1, 2006, about 17,562 people lived in Comines-Warneton. The total area of the municipality is about 61 square kilometers (23.6 square miles). This means there are about 287 people living in each square kilometer. The name "Comines" might come from an old Celtic or Gaulish word. Comines-Warneton is special because it's a place where people can use both French and Dutch languages for official things.

History of Comines-Warneton
The municipality of Comines-Warneton is made up of several smaller towns. These include Bas-Warneton, Comines, Houthem, Ploegsteert, and Warneton. There's also a small area called Gheer within Warneton.
Changing Provinces
In 1963, these towns were moved from the arrondissement of Ypres in the Dutch-speaking province of West Flanders. They became part of the new arrondissement of Mouscron in the French-speaking Hainaut province.
Joining Together
Later, in 1977, these five separate towns (Comines, Houthem, Ploegsteert, Bas-Warneton, and Warneton) were merged. They all became one big municipality called Comines-Warneton.
A Special Location
Because of these changes, Comines-Warneton is now like an "island" of French-speaking Belgium. It's completely surrounded by the Flemish province of West Flanders and the French area of Nord. It's not directly connected to the rest of French-speaking Belgium. This makes it an exclave.
