History of Concepción Tutuapa

Spanish Rule in Tejutla

Pedrocortesylarraz
Bishop Pedro Cortés y Larraz visited Tejutla in 1770.

Long ago, in 1691, the area of Tejutla was very large. It included many towns we know today. These towns were Comitancillo, Ixchiguán, Concepción Tutuapa, Sipacapa, Sibinal, Tajumulco, Tacaná, and part of San Miguel Ixtahuacán.

According to old writings, Tejutla was part of the Quetzaltenango Department. It was known as a "prosperous land" with good weather and plenty of water.

Tejutla was important for trade and religion. In 1768, a writer named Joseph Domingo Hidalgo called Tejutla "El Curato." This meant it was the main trading center for all the towns around it.

Later, in 1771, a religious leader named Bishop Pedro Cortés y Larraz visited Tejutla. He called it "Santiago at the top of the hill." He reported that 64 families lived there very well.

After Guatemala's Independence

Guatemala became independent from Spain. In 1822, a new constitution was written. This document showed Tejutla as part of the modern San Marcos area for the first time.

By 1871, Tejutla had grown a lot and became a "Villa" (a type of town). Its leaders asked the government to make it a department capital. This new department would include many towns, even some that are now in Huehuetenango Department.

At that time, some towns that are now in México, like Motocintla, were also under Tejutla's influence.

However, big changes happened in Guatemala. A group called the liberals, led by generals Miguel Garcia Granados and Justo Rufino Barrios, won power. They defeated the old leaders.

The new liberal government made big changes to the church. They took away land and money from religious groups. This land was then given to their friends and supporters. This made many people in the area become large landowners. These changes also meant Tejutla lost some of its main support and leadership from the church.
