Conejo Island, also known as Isla Conejo (which means "Rabbit Island" in Spanish), is a small island. It is located in the Gulf of Fonseca. This gulf is a part of the Pacific Ocean. Honduras claims the island. However, El Salvador also believes the island belongs to them. This has led to a long-standing disagreement between the two countries.

What is the History of Conejo Island?
The International Court of Justice Ruling
In 1992, a special court called the International Court of Justice (ICJ) made an important decision. This court helps countries solve their disagreements peacefully. The ICJ looked at the borders between El Salvador and Honduras. They focused on certain disputed areas called bolsones. These were places where the exact border line was unclear.
Solving Border Disputes
The ICJ's ruling helped to draw clearer lines for the land border. Later, the Organization of American States (OAS) also stepped in. The OAS is a group that promotes peace and cooperation in the Americas. With their help, and another ICJ decision in 2003, the border was finally marked. This meant both countries knew exactly where their land ended.
The Gulf of Fonseca and Maritime Borders
The 1992 ICJ ruling also talked about the maritime boundary in the Gulf of Fonseca. A maritime boundary is a border in the water. The court suggested that El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua should work together. This was to make sure Honduras could still reach the Pacific Ocean.
Why is Conejo Island Important?
Conejo Island is quite small. However, it was not part of the main discussions about the other islands in the Gulf. El Salvador had asked for a clear answer about every island's status. Despite its size, Conejo Island is seen as a very important spot. It has high naval and military value for both Honduras and El Salvador. This means it is important for their navies and armies.
