Confusion Lake is a small, beautiful lake found high up in the mountains of Idaho, United States. It is located in Elmore County, within the famous Sawtooth Mountains. This special lake is part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, a huge natural playground.

Discovering Confusion Lake
Confusion Lake is a type of lake called an alpine lake. This means it is located high in the mountains. It is also a glacial lake, formed by the movement of ancient glaciers. These giant ice sheets carved out the land, leaving behind the basin where the lake now sits.
Where is Confusion Lake Located?
Confusion Lake is nestled deep inside the Sawtooth Wilderness. This is a protected natural area where the land is kept wild. The lake is in the central part of Idaho. It sits at a high elevation of about 8,270 feet (2,521 meters) above sea level. Water flows out of Confusion Lake into Timpa Creek. This creek then joins the Middle Fork of the Boise River.
How to Visit Confusion Lake
You can reach Confusion Lake by hiking through the Sawtooth National Forest. There are a couple of trails that lead to the lake. One way is to follow trail 479 along Timpa Creek. Another option is trail 462, which follows the Middle Fork of the Boise River.
Because Confusion Lake is in a wilderness area, you need a special pass to visit. This is called a wilderness permit. You can usually pick up a permit at a registration box. These boxes are found at the start of the hiking trails or at the wilderness boundaries. Getting a permit helps protect the natural environment.
