Discovering Confusion Lake

Confusion Lake is a type of lake called an alpine lake. This means it is located high in the mountains. It is also a glacial lake, formed by the movement of ancient glaciers. These giant ice sheets carved out the land, leaving behind the basin where the lake now sits.

Where is Confusion Lake Located?

Confusion Lake is nestled deep inside the Sawtooth Wilderness. This is a protected natural area where the land is kept wild. The lake is in the central part of Idaho. It sits at a high elevation of about 8,270 feet (2,521 meters) above sea level. Water flows out of Confusion Lake into Timpa Creek. This creek then joins the Middle Fork of the Boise River.

You can reach Confusion Lake by hiking through the Sawtooth National Forest. There are a couple of trails that lead to the lake. One way is to follow trail 479 along Timpa Creek. Another option is trail 462, which follows the Middle Fork of the Boise River.
