The Connecticut Post Mall (once called Westfield Connecticut Post) is a large shopping mall in Milford, Connecticut. It is located on the Boston Post Road, also known as Route 1. This mall is currently the biggest in the state of Connecticut. Centennial Properties helps own and run it.
The mall has over 215 different stores. Its main stores, called "anchor stores," are Boscov's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Macy's, and Target. There is also one empty anchor spot where Sears used to be. For fun, the mall has a Dave & Buster's and a big 14-screen Cinemark movie theater, which includes an IMAX screen.
History of the Mall
The Connecticut Post Mall first opened in 1960. Back then, it was an open-air mall, meaning it didn't have a roof over the walkways. It was built by a person named Sol Atlas. The first main stores were a furniture store called W. & J. Sloane and a Stop & Shop supermarket.
In 1962, a department store called Alexander's opened its sixth location at the mall. After a fire happened at one end of the mall, a new discount store called Caldor was built there as a new main store.
Changes and Growth
In 1981, the mall was changed to be fully enclosed. This meant shoppers could walk inside without worrying about the weather. The mall got a makeover in 1990. During this time, the Skyview Cafe food court was added. The Alexander's store also closed.
On August 7, 1991, JCPenney opened its doors in the spot where Alexander's used to be. Another store, G. Fox, was added in 1991. It later changed its name to Filene's in 1993. The Caldor store closed on May 15, 1999, and was later torn down. The Stop & Shop supermarket moved to a new building nearby in the late 1990s. The old Stop & Shop building was then torn down to make way for a new Sears store, which opened on April 1, 2000.
The mall did not want a new mall called New Haven Galleria to be built nearby. It took legal action to try and stop it.
Big Expansion Project
A huge expansion project happened between 2005 and 2006. This project cost $118 million and added a lot of new space.
- More parking was added with an extra level.
- The Filene's store got a third floor. This store later became Macy's in 2006.
- A large new part was added to the mall building. This new area included a big movie theater called Connecticut Post 14 (which is now a Cinemark). It also got a new food court.
- Two more main stores, Dick's Sporting Goods and Target, opened in the spot where Caldor used to be.
In December 2015, the company Westfield sold the Connecticut Post Mall as part of a big deal involving five malls.
