Conrad Krez (born April 27, 1828, died March 9, 1897) was an important person in American history. He was a politician and a military officer.

Conrad Krez's Life Story

Conrad Krez was born in Landau, Germany, on April 27, 1828. He went to two universities in Germany: Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and Heidelberg University.

After some political unrest in Germany in 1848, Krez moved to France. In 1851, he came to the United States and settled in New York City.

The next year, he married Adolphine Stemmler. They had seven children together. His family was also involved in public service. His son, Paul T. Krez, became a judge. His grandson, Frederick W. Krez, also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

In 1854, Conrad and his family moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Krez passed away on March 9, 1897, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is buried at Forest Home Cemetery.

Conrad Krez's Political Work

Krez held several important jobs in government. He was the City Attorney of Sheboygan from 1856 to 1859. A City Attorney gives legal advice to the city.

He was also the District Attorney of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin from 1859 to 1862. He held this job again from 1870 to 1876. A District Attorney works for the government to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes.

Krez started his political career as a Republican. But in 1872, he changed and became a Democrat.

In 1885, President Grover Cleveland chose Krez to be the U.S. Collector of Customs in Milwaukee. This job involved collecting taxes on goods brought into the country. He stayed in that position until 1889.

Later, Krez was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1891 to 1892. The State Assembly is part of the state's law-making body. He then served as City Attorney of Milwaukee from 1892 to 1894.

Conrad Krez's Military Service

Conrad Krez joined the Union Army in 1862. This was during the American Civil War. He helped to create the 27th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Krez was put in charge of this regiment.

He left the volunteer army on August 29, 1865. On January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Krez to become a brevet brigadier general of volunteers. This means he was given the honorary rank of general. The United States Senate confirmed this appointment on March 12, 1866.
