Convention on the Rights of All Migrant Workers facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families is a special agreement, or treaty, made by the United Nations. It was created to protect the basic rights of all migrant workers and their families. A migrant worker is someone who goes to another country to work. This treaty was agreed upon on December 18, 1990, and officially started working in 2003.

This important agreement is part of what is called international human rights law. This means it's a set of rules that aims to protect everyone's rights around the world. The beginning part of the Convention, called the "Preamble," mentions other agreements made by the International Labour Organization. These older agreements also talked about migrant workers and making sure people are not forced to work against their will.

The main goal of this Convention is to protect migrant workers who are not citizens of the country where they are working. Sometimes, these workers can face difficult or unfair working conditions. This treaty helps make sure they are treated fairly and have the same basic rights as others.

Who Has Agreed to This Treaty?

As of December 2019, 55 countries have formally agreed to follow this Convention. When a country "ratifies" a treaty, it means they officially promise to follow its rules. Most of the countries that have ratified this treaty are in North Africa and South America.

It's interesting to note that many countries where a lot of migrant workers go, like those in Western Europe or North America, have not yet ratified this Convention. Other important countries that receive many migrant workers, such as Australia, the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, India, and South Africa, have also not ratified it.

This Convention is an important document. It is even mentioned in the beginning of another big agreement, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This shows how important the rights of migrant workers are seen in the world of human rights.
