Coolhaus is a fun American ice cream company. It started in 2009 in Los Angeles, California. Two friends, Natasha Case and Freya Estreller, created it. They make tasty ice cream sandwiches, bars, and other treats.

How Coolhaus Started

Coolhaus began as an art project in 2008. By 2009, it became a real business. The name "Coolhaus" sounds like "Koolhaas," who was a famous architect. Some of their ice cream flavors are even named after architects!

The founders, Natasha and Freya, started by selling ice cream sandwiches. They used a food truck at a big music festival called Coachella. People loved their ice cream! Soon, many news outlets and social media users talked about Coolhaus. Natasha even left her job at Disney to work on Coolhaus full-time.

Growing Across the Country

Coolhaus added more food trucks in other cities. They had trucks in Austin, Texas, in 2010. In 2011, they added trucks in New York City. Their first ice cream shop opened in Culver City, California, in 2011.

By 2012, Coolhaus had grown even more. They expanded to Miami, Florida. At that time, they had ten food trucks and one food cart. A magazine called Fast Company said Coolhaus was the first "gourmet" (fancy) food truck brand to become popular all over the country.

Reaching More People

Since 2011, Coolhaus also started selling its products in stores. Natasha Case explained that selling in stores helps Coolhaus reach as many customers as possible. Between 2011 and 2014, Coolhaus went from being in just 3 Whole Foods stores to 2,500 stores!

Natasha said that having food trucks, store partnerships, and their own shops helped Coolhaus become so well-known. In 2012, Forbes magazine even put Natasha Case on their "30 Under 30" list for young people doing great things in "Food & Wine."

New Ownership

In 2021, another company called The Urgent Company bought Coolhaus. This company is part of a food technology startup called Perfect Day. After this, Coolhaus started using a special animal-free protein in all its products. This protein is made without animals!

In 2023, The Urgent Company, including Coolhaus, was sold again. A US food tech company called Superlatus bought them. Later, Superlatus itself was bought by TRxADE Health Inc.

Where to Find Coolhaus

In 2014, Coolhaus had two ice cream shops in Los Angeles County. These were in Old Town Pasadena and the Culver City Arts District. They also had ice cream trucks and carts in Southern California, New York City, and Dallas.

You could also buy prepackaged Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches, pints, and bars in many grocery stores. These included Whole Foods, Gelson's Markets, Sprouts Farmers Market, Earth Fare, Fairway Market, Safeway, Publix, and Wegman's. You could even buy Coolhaus products online!

By 2017, Coolhaus was still selling its items in grocery stores. They also continued to operate their food trucks and ice cream shops.

Today, in 2025, Coolhaus products are mostly found at Whole Foods stores. Coolhaus has also expanded its market to Hong Kong, bringing their unique ice cream treats to more people around the world.

The Coolhaus Cookbook

Natasha Case and Freya Estreller, along with food writer Kathleen Squires, wrote a cookbook! It's called Coolhaus Ice Cream Book. The book was published in May 2014 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

This cookbook has lots of recipes. You can find recipes for different kinds of ice creams, gelatos, and sorbets. It also includes recipes for cookies, toppings, and milkshakes. It's perfect for anyone who wants to make their own Coolhaus-inspired treats at home!
