Coolhaus is a super cool American ice cream company. It started in Los Angeles, California in 2009. Two friends, Natasha Case and Freya Estreller, created it. You can find their yummy ice cream in grocery stores. They also have fun food trucks and ice cream shops!

How Coolhaus Started

BananasFosterPint
This "Bananas Foster" ice cream pint is named after a famous British architect, Norman Foster. It's made with banana ice cream and a sweet caramel sauce called dulce de leche.

Coolhaus began as a creative art project in 2008. By 2009, it had grown into a real business! Some of their unique ice cream flavors are even named after famous architects and building styles.

The two founders, Natasha and Freya, started by selling ice cream sandwiches. They used a food truck at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. People loved their treats! Soon, many news outlets wanted to talk about Coolhaus. Social media also helped them become very popular. Because of this, Natasha left her job at Disney to work on Coolhaus full-time.

Growing Across the Country

Coolhaus added more food trucks in Austin, Texas, in 2010. Then, in 2011, they opened trucks in New York City. Their first ice cream shop opened in Culver City, California, in 2011. By 2012, Coolhaus had even expanded to Miami, Florida. At that time, they had ten trucks and one small food cart! A magazine called Fast Company said Coolhaus was the first "gourmet" (fancy and high-quality) food truck brand to become well-known across the country.

From Trucks to Stores

Since 2011, Coolhaus has also started selling its products in stores. Natasha Case explained in an interview that selling in stores helps Coolhaus reach as many people as possible. Between 2011 and 2014, Coolhaus went from being in just 3 Whole Foods stores to 2,500 stores! Natasha believes that having food trucks, store partnerships, and their own shops was key to their success. In 2012, Forbes magazine even named Natasha Case to their "30 Under 30" list for "Food & Wine." This list highlights young people who are making a big impact.

As of April 2014, Coolhaus has two ice cream shops in Los Angeles County. You can find them in Old Town Pasadena and the Culver City Arts District. Their ice cream trucks and carts still operate in Southern California, New York City, and Dallas.

You can also buy pre-packaged Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches, pints, and bars in many grocery stores. These include Whole Foods, Gelson's Markets, Sprouts Farmers Market, Earth Fare, Fairway Market, Safeway, Publix, and Wegman's. Coolhaus products are also available to buy online!

The Coolhaus Cookbook

Natasha Case and Freya Estreller, along with food writer Kathleen Squires, wrote a cookbook called Coolhaus Ice Cream Book. It was published in May 2014 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The book shares recipes for making your own ice creams, gelatos, sorbets, cookies, toppings, and shakes!
