The Coopérative de Transport Maritime et Aérien (CTMA) is a Canadian company that helps people and goods travel by sea and air. It was started in 1944 to connect the Magdalen Islands in Quebec with the rest of Canada.
CTMA, also known as Groupe CTMA, runs a ferry service during certain times of the year. This ferry travels between Cap-aux-Meules in the Magdalen Islands and Souris, Prince Edward Island. The ship used for this trip is called the MV Madeleine II.
The company also offers a special passenger trip from Montreal to Cap-aux-Meules during certain seasons, using the ship MS C.T.M.A. Vacancier. For moving goods, CTMA has a year-round cargo service. This service carries items from Montreal and Matane, Quebec, to Cap-aux-Meules on the ship MV C.T.M.A. Voyageur. Besides sea travel, CTMA also has a trucking company to move cargo and provides air services.
What Routes Does CTMA Travel?
CTMA connects the Magdalen Islands to other places with two main routes:
- One route goes from Montreal to Cap-aux-Meules, stopping in Quebec and Chandler along the way. This is a longer journey.
- The other route is shorter, connecting Souris to Cap-aux-Meules.
What Ships Does CTMA Use?
CTMA uses a fleet of special ships that can carry both passengers and vehicles like cars and trucks. These ships are called RoPax vessels, which means "Roll-on/Roll-off Passenger" ships.

- C.T.M.A. Vacancier: This ship was built in 1973 and joined CTMA in 2002. It's used for passenger trips from Montreal.
- Madeleine: Built in 1981, this ship started with CTMA in 1997.
- C.T.M.A. Voyageur II: This ship was built in 1998 and began service with CTMA in 2019. It helps transport goods.
- Madeleine II: The newest ship, built in 2019, started with CTMA in 2021. It's the main ferry for the Souris route.
