The MS Madeleine is a large ship that carries both cars and people. It is a ferry owned and operated by a company called Coopérative de Transport Maritime et Aérien (CTMA). The Madeleine travels between Souris in Prince Edward Island and Cap-aux-Meules in Quebec.
This ship has had a few different names over the years. It was first known as the Leinster. Later, it sailed as the Isle of Inishmore and then the Isle of Inishturk.

Ship's Journey Through Time
The Madeleine was built in 1981. Its first name was Leinster. It was made for the B&I Line company. At first, it sailed overnight between Dublin and Liverpool.
Changes in Routes and Names
In 1988, the Dublin to Liverpool route closed. The Leinster then moved to a shorter route. This new route was between Dublin and Holyhead. In 1993, the ship moved again. It started sailing between Pembroke Dock and Rosslare. For this new job, its name was changed to Isle of Inishmore.
In 1995, the Isle of Inishmore got new colors. These were the colors of Irish Ferries. A year later, its name changed again to Isle of Inishturk. This was done to save the name Isle of Inishmore for a brand new ship. That new ship was being built in the Netherlands.
Becoming the Madeleine
The new MS Isle of Inishmore was ready in 1997. This meant the Isle of Inishturk was no longer needed on the Pembroke Dock – Rosslare route. After a few months, the Isle of Inishturk was sold. It was bought by Coopérative de Transport Maritime et Aérien (CTMA). This is when it got its current name, Madeleine.
Before it started service with CTMA, some important changes were made. The old lifeboats were taken off. They were replaced with a modern Marine evacuation system. This system helps people get off the ship safely in an emergency.
In 2006, the Madeleine was updated again. This was to meet the newest safety rules. Large parts called sponsons were added to the back of the ship. These sponsons help make the ship more stable in the water.
The Government of Canada is now looking for a new ship. This new ship will replace the MS Madeleine. The Madeleine has been sailing for many years and is getting older.
Ship's Cool Features
The MS Madeleine is a big and powerful ship. It has many features that help it carry passengers and cars safely.
Size and Power
The ship is about 122 meters (400 feet) long. That's longer than a football field! It is also about 18.8 meters (62 feet) wide. The Madeleine has 8 decks, which are like floors in a building.
It is powered by four strong diesel engines. These engines help the ship move through the water. The ship can travel at a speed of about 20 knots. That's around 37 kilometers per hour (23 miles per hour).
Capacity
The Madeleine can carry a lot of people and vehicles. It can hold up to 1500 passengers at one time. It also has 534 beds for people who want to rest. For cars, it can carry up to 326 vehicles. This makes it a very important link for travel between Prince Edward Island and Quebec.
