The Copalis River is a small river, also called a stream. It flows through the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington, United States. This river starts in the lower hills of the Olympic Mountains. It then travels southwest until it reaches the Pacific Ocean.

The name "Copalis" comes from the Quinault language. It refers to a group of Native Americans known as the Copalises. Both the Chehalis people and the Quinault Indian Nation consider the Copalises to be part of their larger tribes.

Journey of the Copalis River

The Copalis River begins its journey in the southwestern part of the Olympic Peninsula. This area is just south of the Quinault Reservation. It is also north of another river called the Humptulips River.

River's Path to the Ocean

From its source, the Copalis River flows southwest. It travels for about 24 mi (39 km). Its long journey ends when it empties into the Pacific Ocean. This happens at a place called Copalis Beach.

Where the River Meets the Sea

The river's mouth is located within Griffiths-Priday Ocean State Park. At this point, the river is next to a narrow strip of land. This land is known as the Copalis spit. The spit is a safe place for many different kinds of birds. These birds often stop there during their long migrations.
