The Copper Mountains are a small mountain range in southwestern Arizona. They stretch about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from north to south. These mountains are located in the southwestern part of the Sonoran Desert, a large, sunny desert region.
About the Copper Mountains
These mountains are found in a desert area known for its unique plants and animals. The highest point in the range is called Coyote Peak. It stands tall at 2,808 feet (856 meters).
Where Are They Located?
The Copper Mountains are located east of Yuma, a city in Arizona. They are also east of the Yuma Desert. Other mountain ranges nearby include the Gila Mountains and Tinajas Altas Mountains.
The area around the Copper Mountains is a wide, flat desert plain. This plain gently slopes north towards the Gila River. The Gila River eventually flows into the southern Colorado River. To the west of the mountains, you'll find the Lechuguilla Desert and Coyote Wash. To the east is the Tule Desert.
Nearby Communities
A few small towns are located about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of the Copper Mountains. These communities are in the Gila River agricultural valley. They include Wellton, Noah, Roll, and Tacna, Arizona.
Important Neighbors
The Copper Mountains are located inside the western part of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range. This area is used by the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Yuma for training. The mountains are also about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of the western end of the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a protected area for many desert animals and plants.
