Corín Tellado was a very famous Spanish writer. Her real name was María del Socorro Tellado López. She was born on April 25, 1927, in El Franco, Asturias, Spain.
She wrote many, many romantic stories and photo-novels. She was so popular that her books sold over 400 million copies! People in many Spanish-speaking countries loved her stories. Her books were even translated into different languages.
In 1994, the Guinness World Records said she had sold the most books written in Spanish. Also, in 1962, UNESCO said she was the most-read Spanish writer after Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote. Her stories were simple and easy to read. Some of her novels even became popular TV shows called telenovelas.
About Her Life
María del Socorro Tellado López was born in a small village called Viavélez. She was the only girl in her family, with four brothers. Her mother was a housewife. Her father worked as a mechanic in the Merchant Navy.
In 1939, after the Spanish Civil War, her family moved to Cádiz. Her love for reading and writing started when she went to a Catholic school run by nuns.
Her father passed away in 1945. This caused her family to have money problems. To help, she sold her first novel, Atrevida apuesta, in 1946. She sold it to a company called Editorial Bruguera.
She kept writing for different publishers. She even started studying psychology, but she didn't finish. This was because Editorial Bruguera hired her to write one short novel every week! She was very fast at writing. She once said she could write a short novel in just two days.
In 1948, she moved back to Asturias with her mother. There, she started publishing a new short story every two weeks. These stories appeared in a Latin American magazine called Vanidades.
Corín Tellado got married in 1959. She had two children, a daughter named Begoña and a son named Domingo. The couple separated in 1962, but they never officially divorced.
In 1962, after UNESCO recognized her as a top Spanish writer, Editorial Bruguera offered her a special contract. She continued to write many books throughout her life. Her favorite novel she wrote was Lucha oculta (1991). She also wrote some children's books with Jesús Zantón Santiago.
Corín Tellado passed away on April 11, 2009, at her home. She was 81 years old. She had three novels that were not yet published when she died. Her stories are still popular today and are even available as digital books.
